IV Sedation

IV Sedation

At Baycliff Dental & Implant Surgery, we are able to offer intravenous sedation both for nervous patients and those undergoing more extensive dental surgery. Sedation will leave you feeling more relaxed and better able to tolerate long sessions, cutting the number of visits you will need to complete your treatment.

What is IV sedation?

Unlike a general anaesthetic, IV sedation leaves you awake and able to cooperate with your dentist, though you will feel drowsy and very relaxed. It is administered via a small injection and acts very quickly, allowing treatment to proceed without delay.
There are many advantages to sedation, including:
  • Sedation calms very nervous patients
  • Sedation allows for longer treatments resulting in fewer visits overall
  • Sedation helps patients with physical problems such as a sensitive gag reflex
  • Sedation wears off quicker than general anaesthetic and has less side-effects
  • Sedation can help patients with particularly sensitive teeth, or who do not respond well to local anaesthetics

What does sedation involve?

IV sedation will not put you to sleep, though you may not remember much about your treatment. Just like a general anaesthetic, you should avoid food or drink for six hours before your treatment, although you can have a few sips of water up to two hours before.
You should avoid alcohol the night before your IV sedation and you should bring the details of any medication you are currently taking with you to your appointment.
You will not be able to drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after dental sedation, and you will need a responsible person to accompany you to the appointment and make sure you get home safely. If possible, they should stay with you for a few hours after the treatment and ideally you should not be left alone for the rest of the day.
"Visited today for sedation and removal of 2 widsom teeth. Being a denist phobe my anxiety levels were through the roof but everyone in the room wth me, nurses and dentists were extremley kind and patient with me. I cannot thank you enough, being referred to numerous places and being messed about i did not see light at the end of the tunnel. However today was the most smoothly ran appointment I have had in the last 15 months of being in this much pain. So I thank you all dearly and would highly reccomend this dental surgery to those who are in fear just like me :-)"
